About
Radish Reads, our Book Group meets at Seven Arts Centre on the 1st Monday in the month. Our books are derived from a reading list compiled during our ‘AGM’ in February made up from members’ suggestions.
The format of the group session is quite structured to enable a thorough discussion of the book in question. The original ‘suggestor’ presents the book and then we go around the group gathering opinions, generating discussion – we go around again giving a mark out of 10 for the reading experience. Quite often, as a result of the discussion, new thoughts emerge and re-evaluations of the read made. The structured bit lasts about an hour after which time we usually hit the bar and return to gossip about other books we’ve read – or just have a gossip. One new thing we did this year was to have a book swap. We all brought 6 books we liked and just swapped them amongst ourselves. It was a really informal session which engendered further discussion about a whole new range of books!
The group usually has about 25 members on its list though we don’t all come at once! The AGM is always an open session to anyone and is advertised in the shop in January. After this a waiting list is compiled and newbies invited if attendance drops within the year.
